Belgic Confession -
Guido De Bras; 1561. Written in response to severe
persecution inflicted upon Calvinists in the Netherlands by the
Catholic government of King Phillip II. It's intent was to
prove that they were not rebels, but law-abiding citizens who
professed the true Christian doctrine according to the
scriptures.

Canons of Dordt -
Synod of Dordrecht; 1618-1619. In response to the
teachings of Jacob Arminius, this document set forth the five
points of Calvinism popularly known by the acronym "TULIP."

Heidelberg Catechism -
Written by Zacharias Ursinus & Caspar Olevianus in 1562 in
response to violent conflict between Calvinists and Lutherans in
Germany. The Heidelberg Catechism is heavily used among
the Dutch Reformed denominations.

Westminster Confession of Faith
- Written by the Westminster Assembly at the call of Parliament
together with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms and heavily
influenced by Edward Reynolds. It is written in the
context of the English Civil War and as a response to high
church Anglicanism. The central doctrines are the
sovereignty of God and the authority and proper interpretation
of Scripture.

Westminster Larger Catechism - The Westminster Assembly met in London from
1643 until 1649 at the bequest of the English Parliament to
determine the character of the English & Scottish national
churches. It was intentioned to create two catechisms, one
larger and one shorter. The Larger Catechism was completed
in 1646, and approved by Parliament in 1648.

Shorter Catechism - The Westminster Shorter Catechism was
completed in 1647 by the Westminster Assembly and continues to
serve as part of the doctrinal standards of many Presbyterian
churches. It is used more frequently than the Larger
Catechism.
