Presbyterian/Reformed Confessions & Catechisms:
  • Belgic Confession - Guido De Bras; 1561.  Written in response to severe persecution inflicted upon Calvinists in the Netherlands by the Catholic government of King Phillip II.  It's intent was to prove that they were not rebels, but law-abiding citizens who professed the true Christian doctrine according to the scriptures.

  • Canons of Dordt - Synod of Dordrecht; 1618-1619.  In response to the teachings of Jacob Arminius, this document set forth the five points of Calvinism popularly known by the acronym "TULIP."

  • Heidelberg Catechism - Written by Zacharias Ursinus & Caspar Olevianus in 1562 in response to violent conflict between Calvinists and Lutherans in Germany.  The Heidelberg Catechism is heavily used among the Dutch Reformed denominations.

  • Westminster Confession of Faith - Written by the Westminster Assembly at the call of Parliament together with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms and heavily influenced by Edward Reynolds.  It is written in the context of the English Civil War and as a response to high church Anglicanism.  The central doctrines are the sovereignty of God and the authority and proper interpretation of Scripture.

  • Westminster Larger Catechism - The Westminster Assembly met in London from 1643 until 1649 at the bequest of the English Parliament to determine the character of the English & Scottish national churches.  It was intentioned to create two catechisms, one larger and one shorter.  The Larger Catechism was completed in 1646, and approved by Parliament in 1648.

  • Westminster Shorter Catechism - The Westminster Shorter Catechism was completed in 1647 by the Westminster Assembly and continues to serve as part of the doctrinal standards of many Presbyterian churches.  It is used more frequently than the Larger Catechism.
